What is RAMSAR Wetland convention?
The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands, recognizing the fundamental ecological functions of wetlands and their economic, cultural, scientific, and recreational value.
What are wetlands?
Wetlands are land flooded with water either permanently or seasonally inhabiting various organisms contributing to the ecosystem.

Important Notes:-
✓Ramsar Convention is known as the Convention of Wetlands. It was established in 1971 by UNESCO and came into force in 1975.
✓World Wetlands Day is observed every year on the 2nd of February because the Ramsar convention was held on 2nd of February 1971 in Iran at a place called Ramsar to spread awareness on the need to conserve wetlands all over the world. The WWD was first celebrated in 1997.
✓India is a party to the Ramsar Convention. India signed under it on 1st February 1982.
✓Maximum number of ramsar sites are in Uttar Pradesh comprising 8 Ramsar sites.
✓15 New Ramsar sites added in India in 2020,and became total 42 in number.
✓Cobourg Peninsula of Australia was the first Ramsar site included in 1974.
✓United Kingdom has the highest number of Ramsar sites(175).
